Lawsuit states 3 companies cut corners on radiation safety at St. George CT lab, sickening dozens - St. George News

A lawsuit has been filed alleging negligence against three companies involved in the construction of a CT imaging center in St. George, Utah. The complaint, which was submitted by a diabetes clinic and represents numerous plaintiffs, claims that employees were exposed to hazardous levels of radiation due to inadequate protective measures during the center's retrofit. The radiation began to leak into the neighboring diabetes clinic shortly after the CT center opened in summer 2023. Testing revealed that lead-lined drywall, supposed to safeguard against radiation, had not been installed, which led to extensive illness among staff, including symptoms linked to radiation exposure. Over two dozen individuals, including children, reportedly experienced adverse health effects, with some showing signs of serious conditions such as leukemia. The plaintiffs accuse the construction and drywall companies, CRC Construction and B & S Drywall, and radiation safety consultants, Medical Physics Consultants, of failing to comply with state regulations meant to ensure safe construction practices for radiation-emitting facilities. The diabetes clinic's director is credited with bringing attention to the issue, prompting independent inspections that confirmed the inadequate installation of necessary barriers. Following these developments, the CT clinic was closed for retrofitting and reopened with proper protections in place by August 2024. The lawsuit was filed on September 22 and is currently proceeding in court.
